Parrots
The summer of '96 found us expanding our bird collection and our breeding facilities, as we spent several months building a new 40'x48' barn to house our collection in. Thanks to the 35+ people who gave up some of their weekends to help us. Janet came up with a great design where inside the barn, there is an interior wall that is in the shape of a U (if you were looking down on it from the top of the barn). The breeding cages are placed around the outside of the U and the nestboxes are placed around the inside of the U. A hole cut in the wall allows the birds to go from their cages to the nestboxes. This allows us to keep the nestbox area quiet and dark, while allowing us to quickly check the nestboxes with minimal disturbance to the birds.
We have been breeding parrots since 1984. We breed
Congo African Greys,
Blue and Gold Macaws,
Greenwing Macaws,
Ruby Macaws,
Military Macaws,
Illiger Mini Macaws,
Hahns Mini Macaws,
Umbrella Cockatoos and
Moluccan Cockatoos.
I've been breeding and raising birds most of my life (pigeons, pheasants, quail, falcons), but Janet has the parrot experience. She was the nursery supervisor for one of the largest parrot breeding facilities in the world, and has hand raised literally thousands of baby parrots from tiels to macaws. We sell most of our parrots direct to people over the internet.
Llamas Our breeding program is driven by a desire to preserve the pure llama line. We are breeding for Tapada Llamas. We strive for conformation, size, wool and looks (in that order). All of our llamas are descendents of the original Hearst llamas. Our 2 foundation females are descendents of Jerry Berman's herd, and our stud males trace their heritage back to Harold Via's herd.
One of our goals is to preserve the size and function of the original llama. Toward that end, we constantly strive to breed large llamas, even though they might not be as fashionable as the "cute fuzzy little ones". One thing that we do to help preserve size is to not breed our females before they are 2.5 - 3 yrs old. You don't build your herd quite as fast this way, but we believe you end up with larger, stronger, healthier babies in the end. Another goal we have is to offer reasonable stud service. Our stud fees start at $300.
We have also been raising llamas for many years. Janet got her first llama in 1979, and has been in love with them ever since. We raise them out of the sheer (no pun intended) joy of having these wonderful animals around. Currently we have 21 llamas in our pastures. * * * * *
