Bird Ownership Statistics in USA

Profiling the Bird Owner (continued)

In the same report, OurPet's Company reports that there are also health benefits associated with owning a pet - things like lowered blood pressure. Finally, the report also goes on to state that on average, a typical household with a dog will spend $1266 annually on their dog, a cat household will spend $930 on their cat annually, and a bird owning household spends average of $881 per year on their bird(s). This data is collaborated by the APPMA 2003/2004 survey that lists the average spending breakout for a bird owner in 2002:

Finally, there is the matter of the initial cost of a parrot itself. As to the cost of a handfed baby parrot, the web was searched for pricing on popular pet parrots, and after comparing 17 different breeders who were all in the same category (i.e. they only sold babies after they had weaned, they all offered to ship birds, they all bred multiple species, they all offered guarantees on health, etc), the following chart was derived, showing the lowest and highest prices found as well as the industry median.
